Oh, what a f***ing night. In astonishingly dramatic fashion--a Papelbon blown save--the Boston Red Sox caved to the lowly Orioles in the ninth inning, opening the door to the playoffs once again for the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays, which came back from a touchdown deficit after seven frames--yes, 7-0--to the AL East Champion New York Yankees, seized the opportunity. A mere three minutes after the Boston implosion, before the Red Sox players even had time to get to the clubhouse, let alone absorb what had just happened, Rays stud third baseman Evan Longoria hit a walk-off home run in the 12th inning, sending the Rays to the post-season and Boston home, to stew in failure for the off-season.
It was perfect. For Boston, it was a perfect disaster. Unprecedented. Misery does have company, though, in this case the Atlanta Braves, which squandered a staggering but slightly smaller lead 8.5 game Wild Card lead to the Cardinals. Boston's advantage over the Rays was nine games on Sept. 4.
With Twitter, these days fans express their joy, frustration and utter shock in real time. Of course, some folks took to the platform to rip on the Sox. Check out some of the best reactions to the Boston Fail Party.
